Senya Izakaya @ Publika KL - The Best Hokkaido Pork Don In Town.

"I will make reservations. There's always a queue," my friend advised.

And so we made our way to Senya at Publika that Sunday evening, to have the acclaimed - best Hokkaido Pork Don in town, or so they say. My friends have had it plenty of times and would undoubtedly vouched for it, but I knew I had to try it for myself.

Highlights Of The Good & The Bad: Botanica+Co, Kakigori, Chocha Foodstore, Leaf & Co, Sis & Co, Pan & Tamper.

This writeup consists of sneak peaks of my recent food rendezvous, some of which turned out to be surprisingly good; some were merely disappointments, but all of which I thought was worth highlighting in this blog.

Pardon me..... but this will be a pretty lengthy though straightforward post.

Have fun reading!

Tsubohachi Izakaya Japanese Restaurant @ Publika KL - Time For Some Fun!

Oh hey, finally! A restaurant which actually approves of playing with food!

Tsubohachi Izakaya Japanese Restaurant

Hailed from Hokkaido Japan and famed for it's Izakaya adventures, Tsubohachi Izakaya - a mouthful I know -  is one of the most interesting Japanese restaurant I've visited, where I had a taste of some less than conventional Hokkaido dishes, made memorable by a witty game of fishing for ramen and tomatoes!

Fresh Grapefruit / Lemon Sour Japanese fruit liquor. Rm17.80.

Ramen Sarada. Rm16.90.

I'm not a huge fan of cold noodles, but this Tsubohachi signature ramen was a fantastic dish to kickstart our meal. Served chilled, noodles, bacon, salad with a drizzle of sesame dressing.

Deep Fried River Shrimp (Rm14.90). Grilled Ray Fin (Rm12.90). Chicken Karaage (Rm13.90).

Japanese grub, best eaten with a pint of sub-zero Asahi, which was exactly what we did. I couldn't stop gnawing on those chewy shreds of grilled ray fin.

Hokkaido Style Deep Fried Potato. Rm8.90.

This dish got me confused. It was sticky, sweet and had mushy-like glutinous rice textures, unlike what I'd expected deep fried potato to be. I'm sure there're other better dishes to order here - like the next dish.

Potato Mentaiko Yaki. Rm13.90.

Easily one of the favorites of the evening - hearty food in all it's glory. On a hotplate, chunks of steamed potato topped with savory cod roe and melted mozarella cheese. We wouldn't mind another one.

Chicken Skin Skewers (Rm7.80). Chicken Thigh Skewers With Leek (Rm7.80).

The chicken skin skewers had a great crunch to it and reminded me of Thai pork chips - unhealthily addictive. You wouldn't go wrong with the chicken thigh skewers too. Those were delicious.

Grilled Mackarel. Rm52.90.

We didn't quite enjoy the mackarel however. You'd have to have beer with this, it could get really salty, and don't eat it in a hurry, you wouldn't want to gag on those small bones. Order with care.

Deep Fried Flounder. Rm42.50.

Four cuts of skillfully sliced and prefectly battered flounder. We really liked this - one of my top picks of the meal.

Chicken Patty with Half Boil Egg. Rm12.90.

At hindsight, the dish looked amazing, but sadly tasted otherwise. The minced chicken patty had a fair share of soft bones in it, which added an unpleasant crunch to every mouthful.

Hokkaido Salmon And Vegetables. Rm21.50.

A rather unmemorable hotplate of Hokkaido salmon and stirfried vegetables in a pool of sweet sauce.

Salmon And Vegetables In Miso Soup. Rm19.90.

We also shared a hearty bowl of salmon and vegetable miso soup.

Hokkai Kamameshi. Rm36.90.

If there's a dish that I would recommend here, it would be this kettle-rice. It takes 20 minutes to cook and the outcome - sweet aroma of fragrant sticky rice topped with delicious king crab, scallop and seafood.

Nagashi Somen Setto. Rm27.90.

"This is so fun!" I squealed. The icy cold water goes in circular motions, dunk in the ramen and vegetables, fish them up with chopsticks, and dip it into the shoyu sauce at the side. It serves no culinary purpose - just some fun time. The set also comes with a platter of tempura and sliced vegetables.

Yuzu. Green Tea. Vanilla. Black Sesame. Rm9.90/two scoops.

The ice cream - nothing to shout about. If you have to order one, go for the black sesame.

Matcha Mochi Mochi. Rm12.90.

Matcha De Roru. Rm14.90.

One of the must-haves here - green tea crepe wrapped with frozen cream, red beans and rice cake. It really didn't need the added drizzle of caramel sauce, it was good on its own!

Overall Rating: 7/10. I was half expecting a typical Japanese feast when I arrived at Tsubohachi that evening, only to be clued that it will be an Izakaya "happy hour" meal instead. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that it was - something a little different; a little more interesting. If I were to pick my favorites - Ramen Sarada, Potato Mentaiko Yaki, Deep Fried Flounder, Hokkai Kamameshi and Matcha De Roru dessert.

Marhaba Yemeni Restaurant @ Sunway Borneo Rainforest KL

Yemeni food is an unexplored cuisine in Malaysian shores. There are simply not many places in town that serves authentic Yemeni cuisine, let alone one that boast commendable food. Essentially resembling Arabic food, expect to see acclaimed grilled tandoor meats, curry, signature mint teas and honey dates dessert in today's write up.

It has been awhile since I've last had Middle Eastern cuisine and I was thrilled to revive some long forgotten taste buds of mine. I even skipped breakfast just so I could stomach more in!

The first decision however, was not what to eat but where to park? Marhaba Restaurant is located at Sunway Borneo Rainforest - where the bistro used to be and directly opposite Sunway Resort Hotel. Prime location but distracted by the ongoing construction happening in the area. There is an open-air car park right behind the restaurant, at a flat rate of Rm3 on weekends.

Upon stepping into the purple crown of Marhaba Restaurant, I was ready to feast like a King.

After days of running around with little rest and in solemn need of sleep, I crawled out of bed tirelessly on a Saturday morning, with the sole purpose of looking for something to eat. A little more on my running-around-escapades on the Friday edition of Spicy Scoops series soon.

About an hour later, I stepped into CoffeeSociete, awakened but not in entirety, in dire need of a second cup of coffee.

Moussandra Mediterranean Restaurant @ Publika KL - My Type Of Comfort Food

I had one of the best moussaka - ever, at a food festival in Australia. An exotic Greek dish which is obviously unfamiliar in Malaysian shores. There are not many restaurants in the Klang Valley that serves authentic Mediterranean cuisine. Henceforth, I've been on the lookout ever since.

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ Restaurant, Publika KL

Read my updated review of Gyu-Kaku 1 Utama Here.

When it comes to a BBQ feast, the first place that'd probably come to mind are Korean restaurants. Fine - perhaps it's my affection towards Korean cuisine.

Nevertheless, it's not easy to find a Japanese BBQ restaurant, or yakiniku in Japanese; let alone a pork-free establishment.

I was glad I stumbled upon this place - for all the wrong reasons however, will rant more about that shortly.

Coffee Stain by Joseph @ Publika Solaris KL

A teddy sunbathing in a tub of hot chocolate! How cool is that!

We're fast approaching year end. The season of merry-making, workload-clearing and nonstop-partying.

Talking about merry-making - I've been doing just that. Catching up with friends, last minute Christmas shopping (it's really a great and valid excuse to shop for yourself too!) and not to mention, putting a close to many of my new years resolutions.

It has been equal parts of exhilaration and exhaustion this year. Still, I managed to pull myself together and had heaps of fun along the way. Another week to go guys! How was your 2013?

Fahrenheit 600 @ Publika KL

It was one of those gloomy evenings, where spit-spatter of rain were evident outdoors, and all you'd feel like doing, is to curl up comfortably on a couch, munch on a bag of chips, and possibly with a suspense novel in hand.

Except that today, I'm stuck at Publika. Post - a not so satisfying coffee, some pancakes, and not knowing where to go next.

My friend suggest that we stay for dinner, and I agreed.

Updated: Read my latest writeup on S.Wine Tropicana City Mall Here.

I was merely browsing through Elite Daily just now, and there were a couple of articles that really got me pondering.

One of it that caught my eye was, 'Is the Guy obliged to pay on the first date?' Bluntly - the answer is yes, with all the logical backups in the article. Just Google it.

Do you think a Gentleman should pickup the bill on a first date?
