Makhan! By Kitchen Mafia @ Petaling Jaya - British? Or Indian?

Run by the same folks behind Hello by Kitchen Mafia, Makhan by Kitchen Mafia is their newest food venture, that is comfortably tucked in The Gasket Alley, situated right next to Jaya One. There are two sections to their menu - one for all-things-British, and the other for Northern Indian cuisine, a rather uncommon, but not exactly a surprising combination.

To be very honest, my taste-buds are not quite familiar with Indian cuisine at all. Hence that afternoon, I chose curry, and eating with my bare hands, over fish and chips and pie. Obviously I needed to eat more Indian food to get to know the cuisine better right?

Being my first time there, I asked for recommendations, and here are some of the top picks.

Brasaria @ Jaya One PJ - The Peruvian Charcoal Chicken Heaven.

After months of drooling over their photographs posted online, I had leisure lunch at Brasaria just yesterday. Being a huge fan of everything-chicken, this was the meal I was looking forward to the entire week.

The menu at Brasaria is Peruvian inspired, with charcoal roasted chicken being the highlight. There are also a number of carb-centric dishes on the menu, with chicken being the obvious link. And as for me, I only had eyes for the chicken - only the chicken. Let's eat!

Yama & J Fusion Sushi Buffet @ Jaya One PJ - Too Much Sauce!

Normally, I’m quite ambitious when it comes to food-tasting.

Fortunately or not, the masses seemed to have subconciously agreed that traditional flavours are always the best, be it Western or Asian cuisine. Anything apart from the usuals would be a challenge to the taste buds - I meant, unusually interesting.

Are you a fan of fusion food?

KimchiHaru @ Jaya One PJ

Few days ago, I brought mum to KimchiHaru for a taste of contemporary Korean cuisine. Mum's experience of Korean food is far less developed than Japanese food, hence, a subconscious bias towards the former. We'll see how it goes for her this time round.

KimchiHaru

KimchiHaru Revisit. Not wanting to delve more on repetitive statements written about this restaurant, I shall leave the rest of the reading to you Here.

To begin with, it wasn't that long ago since I've last visit. Even before I was seated, I already have a rough idea of what I wanted for dinner, hence ordering came easy.

For drinks - as usual, I ordered my favourite Aloe Vera Juice. To my disappointment, my order returned to no avail. I opted for a glass of chilled Korean tea for a change instead.

As we waited for our mains, complimentary banchan (korean side dishes) of kimchi and cabbage with green apple slices topped with cream dressing was served. I did not enjoy the latter but the former was amazing.

Kimchi was still as good as the other time. The distinct flavours and mixture of herbs and spices used, unquestionably complemented each other. I still think Kimchiharu serves one of the better version I've tasted thus far - good enough to warrant second helpings.

Fried Mandu. Rm6.90.

I had a hankering for dumplings, so I ordered a portion to share for starters. Mum complained that the skin was too thick - constantly comparing it with the Chinese sui kaws. I beg to differ - it was meant to be that way. I thought it could've been plumper, but it was a delightful treat. The skins were crispy and a little chewy, with warm fillings.

Fish Jeon. Rm5.80.

The fish pancake was a simple dish but it was quite pleasing. We polished off the whole plate in seconds.

BBQ Pork Set. Rm27.50.

Thinly sliced pork laid on a bed of chopped lettuce - the pork was tasty and tender though it was slightly on the dry side for me. Apart from that, the chopped lettuce looked like recycled portions from someone else's order earlier in the evening.

Spicy Bulgogi Noodle. Rm15.30.

At first sight, it looked like it might take awhile to digest the whole dish - it was huge. The combination of noodles and rice cakes tasted pretty decent; the noodles were springy and the sauce was done just right - not too spicy. Mum wasn't too fond of this nonetheless - to her, it was a bowl of instant noodles drenched in weird sauce. lol. I shall not comment further this time.

Spicy Bulgogi Topokki. Rm13.30.

My dish arrived simmering and steaming hot. I've always been a big fan of Korean rice cakes. This was chewy and sticky with loads of vegetables, fishcakes and chicken bits thrown together. The sauce, made from fermented red chili pepper paste - I thought was just too gooey and didn't have a distinct punch and spiciness that I expected it to be.

Why-oh-why, after numerous versions of topokki try-outs, I still kept on going back to the one I had at Ko Hyang Country Delights.

Overall Rating: 6/10 for the food and environment. I'm also impelled to share that I wasn't too thrilled with their customer service. At numerous instances, I had difficulties prompting the waiters to the table - they looked at me then glanced away; no one seemed to catch my eye. This happen on both occasions while I was there.

Duck King @ Jaya One

This is a Chinese New Year special.

Duck King, Jaya One

It was a Chinese New Year Reunion affair when I visited Duck King. Me and my family, we took up the first dinner slot, which normally starts at 5.30pm. The second session is at 8.00pm, pretty standard across all chinese restaurants for CNY reunion sessions I would presume. Too early for dinner many might say, but I was starving from eating only 'yuk gon' the whole day, thus I'm not complaning.

This is our dinner menu for the night. Way overcharged if you ask me.

We started the dinner of with Yee Sang. Huatttt Ah.

Fortune Jelly Fish Yee Sang.

Braised Shark Fin Soup with Crab Roe.

The shark fins soup was really good. It was stachy yet smooth and they were pretty generous with the shark fin and the crab roe. Though I must say that the portion should definitely be reduced. This came in such a huge bowl that I figured it will be able to feed 25 pax rather than 10 pax. I had 3 bowls and there was still loads of leftovers.

Stewed Sea Cucumber with Deep Fried Pork Trotter.

The pork was very tender and succulent and the gravy was full of flavors. This was a delectable dish overall. (I figured this is braised pork not deep fried pork like the menu suggest).

Steamed Sea Garoupa with Superior Soy Sauce.

The fish was steamed to perfection and its texture was just right, though I must say that the sauce was not well-absorbed into the meat. It was slightly lacking in taste without huge amount of soy sauce.

Signature Roast Duck.

With this being Duck King's signature dish, I shall give it two thumbs up. The meat was very juicy, flavorful and rich. Though this was suppose to be a savoury dish, there was a tinge of sweetness in it. The skin on the other hand was crispy and surprisingly not fat, just the way I like it. I had a good 7 portion of this I reckon.

Steamed Lotus Rice with Chinese Sausage.

Deep fried Chinese New Year Cakes with Pumpkin.

Chilled sweatened Sea Coral with Lemongrass.

Dessert wise, I would definitely prefer the latter over the former. The deep fried nien-gou was a bit too oily for my liking. However, the chilled sea coral was just nice and soothing after all the savoury dishes.

Overall Rating: 7/10 for the signature roast duck and braised pork. The bill came up to about Rm90 per head, way overpriced for essentially a 6 course dinner, with exclusion of a vegetable and chicken dish in the set menu.

Frontera @ Jaya One

This is not a review and just a mere update since we did not ordered enough to justify a review.

5/7/2010

Frontera

Overall rating: 3.5/10 purely for the atmosphere but downgraded because of the food. This one dish was enough to kill my expectations of this place. The rice was dry and bland, the mexican beans was a bit too thick in consistency and looks like it has been sitting there for awhile. The chicken tortilla was okay but nothing to rave upon. Did not take pictures of friend's dishesbut they claimed that it wasn't that good either.

The dishes was priced at +/-Rm25. For that price, I would very much prefer Fresca.
