Best of 2015: Good Food Great Year.

This year, a little over 80 food related post was written on this blog. Alongside some eaten but unwritten ones, all of which had something a little different to offer and a handful turned out to be some of my favorites of the year - luckily for me.

In Best Of 2014, I wrote about some of my top picks for the year, including places like Strangers At 47, A Pie Thing and Ohla Tapas, places which I've repeatedly visited after my first take.

Eating as usual - I have been too preoccupied in exploring new eateries, that I rarely revisit places that I've been to anymore. But now and then I do, provided if its for something that I'd really liked.

Hence, the list below encompassed mostly new eateries opened this year, with one or two at slightly over a year old. At this stage of writing, I still wouldn't know the survival strength of each, let's see how things turn out in years to come.

Did any of your favorites make it to this list? In no particular order, here we go.

1. The Most Creative Japanese Restaurant
Manmaru Robatayaki, Atria Shopping Gallery PJ

To me, Japanese Restaurants have always been same old same old. Seeing sashimi being served on a rock or picking up ramen from a fishing pond. Great plating but taste wise, always similar if not the same.

Things are a little different at Manmaru Robatayaki however, combining different and modern elements on a plate. I think thats why I enjoyed my meal so much, it was interesting and exciting. Having said that, prices do not come cheap, be prepared to fork out an average of Rm80-100/person for a pleasurable meal here.

2. Best Thai Restaurant (Ambience & Food)
Busaba Thai, Sunway Resort Hotel KL

Busaba BSC

In March, I first sampled and reviewed Busaba on this blog. Even then, I already knew that this restaurant would paved its way into this year end posting. Some may call it - love at first sight.

Busaba Thai at Sunway Resort Hotel opened earlier this year, alongside an existing branch at Bangsar Shopping Center. I think one of the main reasons I enjoyed my meal here so much - the gorgeous ambience. It is a mood lifter let me tell you. Food wise too, easily one of the better Thai restaurants I've been to in town.

Address: Lobby Level, Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Persiaran Lagoon, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Selangor.

3. Best Casual Fine Dining Restaurant

Bakar takes pride in being one of the best contemporary barbecue restaurant in town. Everything is prepared over flames of charcoal fire, with modern elements cleverly arranged on a plate, alongside ingredients that you'd never thought would work so well together, experimental dishes if you may.

Though I didn't get to have much that evening, my feast was utterly satisfying. Not only was the core ingredient of each dish executed right, the side dishes also had a distinct flair to it, but more importantly, complimented the overall flavors well.

4. The Big American Eats
Steaks & Lobsters, Sri Hartamas KL (Part 1Part 2)

In the past year or so, we saw the blossoming of new lobster restaurants, all attempting to make a clawing mark in the Klang Valley.

One of my favorites would be Steaks & Lobsters, which I've been to thrice and now recommend to my friends without hesitation. Like the name suggests, the restaurant would not only make a fantastic joint for lobsters but also cleverly cater to those who crave meat. If you're looking for a halal steak or lobster restaurant in KL or PJ, trust me, this place would do you great.

5. Best Day Time Cafe
Yellow Brick Road & Wicked Pancake Parlour, Jalan Batai Damansara Heights PJ

Downstairs: Yellow Brick Road. Upstairs: Wicked Pancake Parlour. You'd get to enjoy your brunch downstairs, while still being able to order and have your pancakes delivered to you from upstairs, and vice versa.

I had one of the most gratifying breakfast here, marvelous french toast and fantastic pancakes. What more can you ask for? Tip: Steer clear of the flowers, the swarm of buzzing flies would put you off.

6. Best Night Time Dessert Bar
Olfactory Bulb, Kota Damansara PJ

I have been to OlFactory Bulb numerous times, for the OFB signature blends - coffees, cocktails, smoothies, cool quenchers, cold pressed juices, organic teas, as well as the amazing toasted waffles.

For me, the best thing about this place would be the cozy lounge vibe. Shady corners, cushioned seats, wooden tables and spotlights, housed within a cozy black interior. I would've never expected a second floor coffee bar to look like this from the outside.

7. The Most Underrated Korean Fusion Restaurant
Ticket To Korea, Setiawalk Puchong KL

For me, Ticket To Korea is one of the most underrated restaurant in this list. The food is fantastic - the location a setback - but the food is still fantastic.

Korean fusion cuisine is profoundly new in Malaysian shores. Not many, if not none. The food here is all about balancing of flavors and textures, yet incorporating clever touches of traditional Korean ingredients. The masterpiece of a young and hot korean female chef. Fighting Oni!

8. Best Soft Serve Ice Cream Parlour
PS Tokyo, SS2 PJ

Even at 9pm, the place was still swarmed with ice cream lovers, all wanting to have a taste of the much talked about new ice cream parlour in town. Did it live up to its hype? Oh, yes it did.

Must try: Matcha and Hojicha soft serve. Great flavors; Incredible textures.

9. My Favorite Speakeasy Bar
Blue Elephant, Bukit Damansara KL

What I really liked about Blue Elephant: Great cocktail concoctions and the cinematic vibe. What I didn't quite liked about Blue Elephant: The amplified music volume which I felt was way too loud for a speakeasy lounge come bar.

Free cocktails on Ladies Night on Thursday, 9pm onwards.

10. Best Casual French Restaurant
Rendez-Vous, Bangsar KL

This French restaurant is not new, clearly more than a year old. I'd blame my dwindling french food radar for not spotting this place earlier.

The menu here is extensive; the food affordable; the portion generous. If you're on the lookout for trying someplace new, this great French restaurant would do you well. I'd highly recommend.
