Whimsical Gelateria & Caffe by Cielo Dolci & Mad About Coco @ Publika KL

The gelato adventure continues. This time, with a cafe in tow!

This is a two part post - starting with my bounteous brunch affair first, followed by hot chocolate!

Whimsical Gelateria & Caffe by Cielo Dolci

First and foremost, I don't fancy restaurant that has names which spans any more than 2-words long. To top that, Whimsical-what? I shall just stick to Whimsical.

For those who don't know, Cielo Dolci (ceh-lo-dol-cee) is an ice cream parlor, made exclusive by the handcrafted and cleverly concocted, unique gelato flavors. Inspired by what us, Malaysians really like - Nasi lemak flavor, Tofu-fah flavor and Chocolate chili padi flavor to just name a few.

The original ice cream only parlor is located inside Paradigm Mall.

Today, I'm bringing you to their exciting new venture. A cafe!

Whimsical is located where Lammeeya used to be, right below The Red Bean Bag, and just few doors away from Coffee Stain by Joseph and CoffeeSociete. Looks like I've been visiting Publika more often than I realized.

Expect to see a loads of gelato and Western breakfast combo in their brunch menu.

I was also quite surprised to see a fair selection of mains - from pastas to salads, chicken and lamb being offered. The outlet is also pork-free.

To note, I think their recycled-paper menu is in dire need of reprinting - the ink is seriously rubbing off. There were missing alphabets everywhere to the extend that some had to be rewritten with pen.

Cotton Candy Affogato. Rm13.

I've not been to OhScooter, so when I saw cotton candy affogato in their menu, of course I had to give that a go!

You are not meant to pour the espresso over the cotton candy. I repeat: Do not pour the espresso over the cotton candy. It will never sink in - not meant to be anyway. Manually compress the cotton candy, lift it up, and pour the espresso into the cup. Hidden beneath, a scoop of delectable coconut gula melaka gelato.

Cappuccino. Rm10.

Whimsical Lemonade. Rm13.

Being one of Whimsical's specialty - and for 13 bucks, I was expecting a bit more than just soda and syrup.

Whimsical Breakie. Rm27.90.

Breakfast in whimsical proportions. The highlight for me would have to be the sausages and waffle. The lamb and beef sausages were juicy and scrumptious. The savory waffles - a rare find - came surprisingly delightful too.

Rise & Shine. Rm22.90.

Dream come true. Ice cream for breakfast! The beef bacon gelato tasted sweet and had a hint of savory in it, from the bits of bacon inside. It complimented the pancakes really well.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken. Rm20++.

I was curious how buttermilk chicken would taste like, so I ordered this - and regretted my decision on the very first bite. The chicken was extremely dry and tasted very flat. Those red slices are warm beetroot - an overwhelming amount of it. None of us liked this dish.

Whimsical Waffle. Rm19.90.

After all the savory treat, we ordered a sweet waffle to share. The waffles were perfect - nicely crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, topped with a scoop of vanilla cinnamon gelato and strawberries.

Overall Rating: 7.5/10. The food was good, the gelato was great. It was nice to see a whole lot happening in the menu as well. I would certainly return to sample some of the other mains. Expect to pay a little more for breakfast here, it is priced slightly above the cafe-average. Also reiterating from the above, the menu needs reprinting really badly.

After lunch, we walked around Publika aimlessly for awhile, trying to decide where to go next.

There are so many hidden gems here - new ones as well as not-so-new ones, hidden in less than strategic locations. So, it really does pay to walk around and explore the place a little bit more. Good exercise after a full meal too.

That's when we found Mad About Coco.

Mad About Coco

Like the name suggest, Chocolate is the Rockstar of this chic-looking chocolatier. Located further down from Whimsical Cafe, upstairs from Mee Jawa and right next to Moussandra

That's right - the majority of diners here are girls. Easily outnumbering the guys by 10:1. Probably attracted by the cute and chic-looking interior.

It felt like though I was walking through a Baby Shower - loads of tiffany greens and dusty pinks. There's a wig stand and a couple of retro looking props at one corner too. If you're Afro-inspired that day, go for it!

Chocolate Drink. Rm12 (Hot) / Rm15 (Cold).

Overall Rating: 6/10. Mad About Coco was brimming with chocolate-lovers on that stormy Sunday evening. Perfect - just perfect timing for a heartwarming hot chocolate drink. Now, the so-called cup doesn't come with handles. So, the only way to drink it is to hug it like a soup bowl! Perhaps a little awkward for some but it was okay for me.

My preference on a good chocolate drink would always leaned towards the richer and thicker versions - somewhere along the likes of Cosans or Artisans. Unfortunately for me here, they use water instead of milk. So, you'd get this watery rather than creamy texture. Kids would probably love this - people like me won't. However, I know I'm missing out some of the other tantalizing chocolate desserts here. As for now, I reckon I'm not that Mad About Coco after all.
