Gastro Bar, By Burgeon @ Aman Suria PJ - New Name New Beginnings.

Let us now restart.

Gastro Bar, By Burgeon

It was merely months back since I have last had a taste of what I thought was one of the best red velvet cake in town, at Ribs By The Burgeon. Even on a weekday, the place was brimming with crowds of hungry patrons, eager to gorge on the much talked about pork ribs around. Ironically, shortly after just months of operation, the restaurant decided on a revamped, and later renamed to Gastro Bar, By Burgeon.

Why the short opening and prompt closure then you'd wonder?

So here I am, lingering with curiosity, but obviously thrilled, to see what Gastro Bar By Burgeon have to go offer.

Now, Gastro Bar, By Burgeon serves modern fusion cuisine, fine-dining style.

The food menu consist of two parts - entrees and desserts. Don't go looking for the mains menu - there isn't one. The beverage menu on the other hand are a little more extensive - cocktails, mocktails, wine and liquor, corkage charges apply.

Important note: No bookings are required for the time being. For men - no slippers and shorts; Ladies, dress as you'd like. For me, they may be potentially turning away customers who are not aware of the dress code. Aman Suria, is afterall, a neighbourhood area, where dressing up is uncommon.

The interior was still in-works when I visited, hence I'm not going to reveal much just yet. Watch this space for updates!

Northern Pate. Rm32.

A delicious rendition of creamy pork liver pate infused with mandarin liqueur. There were two vibrant flavors on the platter - the pate and spiced onion chutney. Both tasted great on its own but probably a hint too strong for each other. Served with rye bread.

Beef Tartare. Rm68.

What a stunner! The classic raw cuts of black angus tenderloin had fantastic textures, best eaten with toasted herbed baguette. I had one half on its own and the other with confit yolk of quail egg poured over. So good!

Satay. Rm38.

One word: Sensational. Apart from the marvelous cuts of juicy pork cheeks, the caramelised pecan crunch added great textures to the sauce. I don't think I would ever forget this satay, though price wise, it would definitely hinder me from ordering more.

Ikan Bakar. Rm48.

The grilled stingray probably won't appeal to everyone for sharing. It had an overpowering peppery taste that pinches the tongue, and the truffled black caper sauce simply adds to the fieriness. But for those who favor, give the lemon a good squeeze and sprinkle coconut flakes all over. You'd get a fragrant, sweet and peppery finish.

Choplets. Rm58.

Signalling for a beach vacation? In a coconut shaped bowl, the New Zealand lamb cutlets came doused in tequila and lathered with very spicy jalapeno sauce - jalapeno, chili, chili padi and capsicum, nicely balanced with sweet cranberry and walnut sauce in between. Underneath, addictive deep fried popiah chips.

Pear And Chardonnay. Rm38.

This dessert gave my meal a nice and sweet finish. To be eaten together - crunchy poached pear in banana and parsley crumbs, apple chardonay ice cream and meringue slices.

Mushroom Cake. Rm28.

For me, this savory dessert was neither here or there. The steamed mushroom cake was moist and nicely done but probably needed extra bits of mushrooms and flavors. I thought the coconut, butterscotch and white chocolate sauce didn't exactly compliment either.

Mocktails: Citrus & Pearls (Rm22) - Grapefruit, barley, thyme, nutmeg.
Black & Black (Rm22) - Blackberry, Sarawak black pepper, thyme, lemon, soda.
Cocktails: The Carnival (Rm42) - Bourbon popcorn ice cream, chocolate, milk soda, coffee liqueur, rum, tequila.
Sherlook (Rm38) - Rooibos, cardamom, lemon, orange liqueur, Japanese whiskey.
Cocktail: Genesis (Rm42) - Sarsaparilla, yuzu, cilantro, sour rhubarb liqueur, gin.

That evening, I also got to sample a handful of cocktails and mocktails. Concoctions were unique though a little on the lighter side, perfect for the ladies nevertheless.

Overall Rating: 7/10. Fancy pancy but not exactly hunky dory. The chef seemed to have a strong liking for distinct, spiced flavors, especially on the sauces, some of which I thought were slightly overpowering. Personal preference aside, presentation could have been more visual appealing, though that has never bothered me, I have always been a taste-over-presentation eater. My favorites: Satay (definitely!), Beef Tartare, Choplets and Pear And Chardonnay for dessert. For the time being, the sudden move does seemed rather ambitious to me - will see how things go in the next couple of months.

  2. @ulric, @sharon loh - The restaurant's revamped is not as simple as to only cater fine-dining scene, but yet they have a higher level long term goal to achieve Michelin star standard in future.

Also, restaurant's chef were given a different chances to explore more on experimental cuisines.

    2. Its a very far fetched dream for now as the Michelin star(s) is only awarded to restaurants in very specific countries/cities which are covered by the Michelin guide. This is THE most important criteria that most people are unaware of. There are only 4 in Asia at the moment-Japan (Tokyo, Osaka,Kyoto), Hong Kong, Macau and recently Singapore. Malaysia (let alone Petaling Jaya) isn't even on their list. There have been articles projecting how certain countries (like Malaysia) will never be on the Michelin guide's radar as the country itself does not have a high enough demand/sales of Michelin goods. Just a thought.

    3. I'd have to agree with you. For now, the idea seemed rather far-fetched, particularly so since the restaurant is still exceedingly new.

Having said that, I think it's great to have ambition and strive for something which may, or may not, be possible in the near future.

Just my two cents worth too =)
