Top 5 Best Salted Egg Fish Skin And Potato Chips Snacks

I think I gained a kilo or two writing this page.....

Over the course of the past two weeks, I went on a snack binge, taste-testing an assortment of salted egg snacks, from homegrown gourmet brands to some of the best in the market, or so they claimed.

Eating was really not the most arduous part, curating this write-up was. Henceforth, in no particular order, here are some of my top picks. What are some of your favorites? What other snacks would you like me to try?

Tip : Most salted egg snacks generally have a shelf life of 12 months, but best eaten within one month of opening.

👍 For the variety - I recommend HOFU Shiitake Mushroom Crisp (original) | HOFU Salted Egg French Fries | HOFU Salted Egg Potato Chips
HOFU may be one of the pricier option compared to the rest, simply because of the quality of products they put on the shelf. Like Irvins and Golden Duck, I've had HOFU plenty of times, an easier reach for me, compared to the two other Singapore favorites. HOFU is available at most gourmet supermarkets in the Klang Valley. For someone who loves thick cut potato chips, I enjoyed HOFU's Salted Egg Potato Chips the most, which I thought had a much more toothsome texture compared to the others, feels tad more legit too for that matter. While I may be an advocate of the brand, I felt that HOFU can do better in terms of consistency. At times, I noticed that some parts of the snack was coated with more salted egg and some not. The French Fries and Shiitake Mushroom Crisp (in original and salted egg - I prefer the original) are some of their newer additions, both of which I thought were fantastic! Again - you know they are legit when the mushrooms came in whole and not in pieces. I finished everything at one go! One of the reasons why I really like HOFU is that it constantly revise their product variety. Give me new things to try!

2. BOSS SALTED EGG CHIPS

👍 For a light everyday salted potato chip snack - I recommend BOSS Salted Egg Chips
BOSS Salted Egg Chips is probably the most affordable (I wouldn't say cheap, because if you want cheap, you eat mamee) among the lot, at almost RM20.00 cheaper per pack compared to Irvins, and at the same packet size. No fish skin rendition for the brand however. It was my first time taste testing BOSS, and I felt that although the salted egg coating and seasoning may not be as plentiful and rich as the rest, I thought that the chip texture was great - not too ultra crisp, with the right chip size, and a little more dehydrated (drier) compared to the rest. For me, BOSS would be a great light snack to consider, because sometimes having wee too much salted egg chips can get real cloying, or 'jelak' like they say.

3. HOU SEK GOURMET SNACKS

Flavors & Prices :

Golden Salted Egg Fish Skin (RM22.00 / 125gm)
Golden Salted Egg Potato Chips (RM20.00 / 125gm)
Crispy Original Fish Skin (RM9.00 / 60gm)

👍 For a value for money salted egg snack - I recommend HouSek Salted Egg Fish Skin
Hou Sek was my least familiar brand among the lots, as I've ever only stumbled upon it once. Hou Sek's Salted Egg Fish Skin is priced about the same as Golden Duck, cheaper compared to Irvins and HOFU, at the same packet size. In terms of taste and texture comparison, HouSek's fish skin rendition came in large pieces (fantastic!), had quite a nice crackle to it, was not too battered and yolky (which I like!), though it had a bit more fishier aftertaste compared to the rest. Hou Sek is the only brand that carries original Fish Skin (w/o salted egg) in this list. It doesn't have much flavor on it's not (I don't think it's even salted) though a great alternative for those wanting to try fish skin, without compromising on the cholesterol.

4. IRVINS SALTED EGG

DANGEROUSLY ADDICTIVE SALTED EGG SNACKS

Flavors & Prices :

Salted Egg Potato Chips [Big] (SGD16 / 230gm)
Salted Egg Fish Skin [Big] (SGD16 / 230gm)
Salted Egg Cassava Chips [Big] (SGD15 / 230gm)
Salted Egg Potato Chips [Small] (SGD8 / 105gm)
Salted Egg Fish Skin [Small] (SGD8 / 105gm)
Salted Egg Cassava Chips [Small] (SGD7.50 / 105gm)
Hot Bomb Salted Egg Potato Chips [Big] (SGD16 / 230gm)
Hot Bomb Salted Egg Fish Skin [Big] (SGD16 / 230gm)
Hot Bomb Salted Egg Cassava Chips [Big] (SGD15 / 230gm)
Hot Bomb Salted Egg Potato Chips [Small] (SGD8 / 105gm)
Hot Bomb Salted Egg Fish Skin [Small] (SGD8 / 105gm)
Hot Bomb Salted Egg Cassava Chips [Small] (SGD7.50 / 105gm)

👍 For a trustworthy brand - I recommend Irvins Salted Egg Fish Skin
Irvins, the brand, probably needs no introduction and is possibly one of the pioneer when it comes to salted egg snacks. I've had Irvins numerous times (the amount of money I spend on chips...) throughout the years and yes - I can vouched that it's really dangerously addictive. Of all the Salted Egg Fish Skin snack that I've had, Irvins came tops, simply because of it's consistency in terms of texture and flavors - the best IMHO. Having said that, I don't quite like the other types though. The Salted Egg Potato Chips and Cassave Chips was far too crisp and smashed up for my liking, in fact, it was my least favorite among the lots. Their new hot bomb version also, was far too hot for me to enjoy. For those who have a fiery tongue, you may like it nevertheless. No harm trying however. Tip : To avoid queues, head to the Irvins Plaze Singapura outlet. There're always stock on hand, even up till closing time.

5. THE GOLDEN DUCK CO.

AWARD WINNING, GOURMET SALTED EGG YOLD SNACK

golden duck fish skin and potato chips

Flavors & Prices :

Salted Egg Yolk Potato Crisp (SGD7 / 125gm)
Salted Egg Fish Skin (SGD7 / 125gm)
Chilli Crab Seafood Tempura (SGD7 / 125gm)
Salted Egg Crab Seafood Tempura (SGD7 / 125gm)

Official Website : https://thegoldenduck.co/

👍 For a decent tempura alternative - I recommend Golden Duck Chili Crab Seafood Tempura
Golden Duck seemed to have fallen into the 'second choice' category, after Irvins (pardon my frankness), in Singapore at least. Again, I've had Golden Duck a handful of times, and would somewhat always opt for the former. While the queue here is always shorter (or close to none at most times), I liked the fact that the brand carries stock at all major supermarkets and 711, making it super convenient to purchase. Price wise, it's about a dollar cheaper compared to Irvins, for the same packet size. The brand recently came up with 2 new local flavors - Chilli Crab and Salted Egg Crab Seafood Tempura. Unfortunately during my recent visit to Singapore, most places ran out of the Salted Egg Crab Tempura option (it must be that good), so I only had a taste of the Chilli Crab version. For me, it had a well-balanced texture of seaweed and house-made tempura batter, not too shabby and I quite like it. Is there really real crab meat though?
