Bites Cafe @ Lake Fields Sg Besi KL

"Sharon, it's 6pm. Here's the place: The Bites Cafe - Lake Fields", Sarah reminded me the day before.

Venturing into unfamiliar territory that evening, I cruised into Lake Fields feeling exceedingly excited. I really didn't know what to expect - of the area, of the cafe and of the food. Driving there from peejay was a breeze. No traffic, and it took me merely 30 minutes before I arrived on the dot, at 6pm.

Bites Cafe is the kind of place that you'd drive pass and not go unnoticed - the glaring yellow signboard says it all, and the car too for that matter.

I met up with Sarah and Becky for dinner here a couple of nights back. What we thought would be an orderly dinner turned out to be an unexpected feast! If you are a huge fan of Western and Cafe food, like me, you have to read on.

With Becky from Rebeccasaw and Sarah from Sarahmaylow.

As soon as I stepped foot into Bites, I was instantly drawn to the lineup of colorful photo frames that adorned the walls. Not exactly extraordinary per se, but fancy photo frames that denotes quirky statements get a double thumbs up from me.

Decorated in retro hues, playful even, the place was no doubt small, but good enough to fit about 50 per seating.

Call and make a booking if you're planning to come in a big group. The place could get really packed especially during peak-eating hours. Bites also do birthday parties and celebrations. On that, you'd get your name scribbled on that massive chalk board right next to entrance.

By the time we were halfway through our dinner, Bites was running on full capacity. For a cafe that is barely 3 months old, I was quite surprised. That, speaks a lot about the quality of food served.

Dinner tonight consist of some breakfast menu items as well as some main dishes. I have to say this again - I still think that having breakfast dishes for dinner to be a great idea! This is going to be a full on feast I tell you.

On that note, the cafe is pork free. Let's talk about the food now.

Honey Ginger Tea. Rm8.90.

Fresh Squeezed Juices. Rm7.90 - Rm8.90.

Cute little cottage-servings of freshly squeezed fruit juices.

Tomato Soup. Rm9.90.

For appetizer, we had tomato soup. It came in a nice creamy texture but was a hint too savory for my liking.

It's A Wrap. Rm14.90.

Fit for a vegan, the burrito was stuffed with avocado and crisp greens, tossed in orange and berries dressing. Ours came wrapped with additional salmon, very refreshing indeed.

Eggs Benedict. Rm17.90.

Opt for either smoked salmon or beef bacon - I reckon most would pick smoked salmon. This was done alright - the egg was good, the bread was good and the fillings too.

The Swiss. Rm14.90.

I love the crispness and slits of potato rosti - always have. This came a little too heavy in sour cream though. We did enjoyed the scrambled eggs and the twirl of smoked salmon nevertheless.

The Mexican. Rm12.90.

Neatly tucked breakfast buritos with eggs, sausage, mushroom and cheese, topped with seasoned tomato puree. This may looked really healthy at hindsight but I assure you, it's naturally delicious.

 The Italian. Rm14.90.

Another eggy dish that was pleasing to the taste buds. Breakfast frittata with turkey ham, mushroom, onions and spinach. I would definitely order this again.

Club Sandwich Waffle. Rm12.90.

Too big for a single mouthful! I'm not complaining though. The waffles were done very light and crisp, balancing out the rich fillings inside.

Grilled Chicken and Waffle Sandwich. Rm15.90.

Like an open faced waffle, slices of grilled chicken breast doused in mushroom sauce and cheese, hidden beneath a sunny side up. This would easily fill you up.

Breakfast Pizza. Rm13.90.

The part that killed it for me - the crusty pizza base - that was seriously addictive. If there's one breakfast dish I would come back for, it would have to be this.

Beef Bacon and Shrimp Pasta. Rm18.90.

For under 20 bucks, this is as good as it gets. Generous serving of shrimp and bacon that you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else, also one of my top picks of the night.

The Malaysian. Rm14.90.

The fried chicken was scrumptious. In fact, the skin had a nice crackle to it. The sambal on the other hand, was very spicy and sweet though it did do its job of balancing out the saltiness of the chicken. The rice too could've been more fragrant.

Roasted Spring Chicken and Vegetables. Rm26.90.

The roasted spring chicken had toothsome textures and the savory homemade sauce complimented the dish very well. That said, with so much going on in my meal, this was easily forgettable.

Braised Lamb Shank. Rm32.90.

A visually appealing plate of lamb shank that needs better marination. On its own, it tasted fine, but with the gravy, it felt separated - if any of that made any sense.

Grilled Salmon Fillet on Crispy Potato Cake. Rm32.90.

A massive chunk of grilled salmon, nicely flaked meat and excellent crisp skin, on a pool of rich and flavorsome cream sauce.

Dessert Waffles with Salted Gula Melaka Ice Cream (Rm11.90) Pandan Kaya Ice Cream (Rm11.90).

Some would love crisp and light waffles; some would like fluffy and rich buttermilk ones. I prefer the latter. Preference aside, The Last Polka probably carries the best salted gula melaka ice cream in town!

Affogato. Rm9.90.

Pour now! Pour now! Wait! Now Pour! So much for food photography. Two scoops of ice cream sprinkled with crushed cranberry almond biscotti and a shot of coffee at the side.

The Last Polka Ice Cream. Rm9.90.

I ambitiously told my friend that I will attempt every single flavor of the ice cream here. All twenty of it. Towards the end of my hefty meal, I ended up finishing only one.

Overall Rating: 7.5/10. Told ya it was a full on feast! Among all, The Italian, Breakfast pizza, Beef bacon and shrimp pasta and Grilled salmon fillet would have been my top picks. Though like most new restaurants, some dishes are still on an experimental phase, hence, may need minor tweaking, All in all, I thought Bites Cafe to be an excellent find in Lake Fields, especially for neighborhood peeps. Notwithstanding, I heard that there will be a new burger place opening soon next door. Shh.
