Tsukemen & Izakaya IEYASU @ Avenue K KL - An Acquired Taste

You know what, I shall just call this place - Japanese Restaurant in Avenue K. With a tongue-twisting name like that, you can't seriously expect the powderful Malaysian tongue to pronounce it correctly, let alone remember it right?

Tsukemen and Izakaya IEYASU

The restaurant's specialty would have to be the tsukemen - a unique dipping noodle dish, where ramen noodles are dipped into a bowl of thick broth, served with pork slices, bamboo shoots and eggs. Why of course I was eager to sample, this is the first I've had in Malaysian shores!

The restaurant definitely exudes an authentic Japanese charm to it. Private-room-like seating arrangements, an al-fresco area at the back for smokers, and a communal table smacked in the middle of the room.

What I really didn't fancy about the design though - the uneven stone tiles at the entrance. Definitely not heel-friendly for the females. So do watch your step!

Like many Japanese restaurants, the menu may vary seasonally; there are often specials that are not fixed in the menu. Regulars may know about it, else - please ask.

Before I start my review, a few pictures of me and the girls taken that evening. #allmine

White-collared girls. Anyway, starting my meal with some Japanese nibbles.

Salmon Sashimi. Rm33.

The slices of shashimi were such great appetizers - fresh and bouncy on every mouthful.

Fried Small Shrimp. Rm8.

However, the fried shrimps came a tad oily and definitely not as good as the one I had in Aoyama The Green Room.

Fried Pork on Skewer. Rm11.

The pork skewers on the other hand looked quite different from what was depicted in the menu. I thought these were a little too fatty and tasted just alright.

Assorted Tempuras. Rm18.

The tempuras' were nicely crisp and not oil-drenched at all.

Spicy Chicken Wing. Rm16.

Since everyone at the table were raving about how good this was, I decided to take a bite even though I'm not a huge fan of chicken wings nor spicy food. For those who love spicy wings, these are for you!

Japanese Radish Salad with Scallop Sauce. Rm15.

Sauteed Pork and Eggplant Miso Salad. Rm16.

Ieyasu Original Salad. Rm18.

The salads were great - it was refreshingly healthy and had a nice crunch to it. My favorite of the three would have to be the Ieyasu original salad. I'm a hint bias here since there were hidden salmon slices inside too.

Assorted Skewers Platter.

The skewers platter were such a great hit - chicken, pork, fish paste, intestines, Japanese spring onions, garlic and chicken skin. Everything on one plate! Remember to use the raw egg dipping at the side. I could easily famish this all on my own!

Tsukemen. Rm23-Rm25.

All ramen noodles comes in one size only. It was springy, soft and tummy-filling. By the way, you're meant to dunk the ramen into the sauces at the side and not pour it over. Though I think most people would eventually do.

There are 5 types of sauces - soy sauce, sesame, miso, Japanese curry and tomato and cheese. My pick would have to be the soy sauce version, which is also the best seller to date. It had the perfect combination of salty and sweet. I really liked the tomato and cheese fusion too. Those tasted tad sour but had a flair of it's own.

Red Bean Milk Tea (Rm7). Matcha Milk Tea (Rm7).

Expect a lot of popular Taiwanese desserts and drinks featured in the menu. Notwithstanding, the red bean milk tea that I had was fabulous, but stay away from the matcha milk tea!

12 Years Hibiki Suntory Whisky.

Soju. Rm15.

Overall Rating: 5.5/10. The tsukemen dipping noodle dish was a great idea. The sauces were rich and had intense and distinct flavors on it's own. That said, I thought this dish may be an acquired taste, namely because of it's strong flavors that may not fit every Malaysian's taste buds. Withal, the rest of the Japanese dishes that I sampled were quite tasty, but priced slightly on the higher side and on par with the likes of the KLCC restaurants. Nevertheless, there are a couple of value for money lunch promotions going on at the moment. And again, not a huge fan of the uncomfortable and uneven stone-tiles at the entrance.
