MOF Japanese Cafe @ Sunway Pyramid KL - Inconsistent Service

It's either Malaysian's dire love for Japanese cuisine, or, I unpretentiously ordered all the wrong dishes - the food I had in MOF really wasn't that great.

What's with my unlucky streak of food adventures nowadays?

Notwithstanding - not all reviews in this blog are positive reviews. I would love to share wonderful and amazing food with the masses, but unfortunately - that's not always the case; not all that I've stumbled upon are worthy of praise. You would have to read the entire blog post to find out.

Nevertheless, the search for awesome food goes on.

MOF Japanese Café

The first thing that comes to mind here - desserts.

Somehow or rather, this place gave me an impression of Japanese cream puffs and cheese cakes. Am I the only one?

MOF Japanese Café is not from Japan - it's from Singapore, and with two branches set up in the Klang Valley to date, at Sunway Pyramid and Pavilion.

I casually picked up and flipped through it's menu and was left bemused. They offer quite a fair number of Japanese dishes, with close to 50 variations of desserts to boost. There is even a whole page dedicated to green tea drinks and desserts only!

Well, at least my assumptions were partially right - this is a dessert place after all.

Nabe Salmon. Rm29.90.

This Japanese hot pot, or nabe, is heated right in front of you. Loaded with an abundance of silky smooth tofu, lingzhi and needle mushrooms, vermicelli noodles, onions, carrots, and Chinese cabbage tucked right beneath.

On a separate plate - salmon and sweet potato slices.

Chicken Curry Pot. Rm12.90.

Since we ordered a few more side dishes to share, I was rather glad that this came in a smaller-than-expected portion. However, it was packed with a good 5 to 6 chunks of crispy chicken meat, and the curry tasted fine and light.

That said, I know reheated dishes are a norm in most restaurants nowadays, but by all means - wipe the steamed up edges clean before serving!

Miso Ramen. Rm12.80.

This bowl of miso ramen tasted rather average - nothing spectacular, and leaning more towards the sweet side. Texture of the noodles were no where near bouncy and frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if all of it came out of an instant noodle pack.

Chicken Teriyaki. Rm10.80.

The teriyaki chicken on the other hand was quite delicious. Glazed with a layer of sweet teriyaki sauce - I had fun poking at these little chunks of tender chicken thigh, and grabbing the whole lots of seaweed on my very first bite.

Tako Age. Rm12.80.

For me, this was like another one of those microwaved outcome. It tasted quite fine, really - just that it's texture felt artificial, like it came out of a frozen bag.

Affogato. Rm8.50.

When I was flipping through the menu, this caught my eye. But I was dying for my daily hound of caffeine, so I ordered this - and the cappuccino below.

A fantastic combination of macha ice cream and whipped cream with a shot of espresso. Definitely more dessert-ish than coffee-ish.

Cappuccino. Rm7.50.

The cappuccino was merely there - but still drinkable I guess.

Espresso Frappe. Rm11.00.

The espresso frappe wasn't that great too - the coffee wasn't blended well.

Genmacha. Rm9.00.

Meant to be shared, a pot of tea poured over dainty little cups.

Overall Rating: 6/10. I've heard quite a few things prior to visiting - about the inconsistent service and the rather modest experiences. In my case, the servers delivered wrong orders to our table twice. Withal, the food I sampled wasn't that great, but I figured the desserts are still worthy of a go. Stick to the desserts!
