I'm sure most of you agree that 2020 was a roller coaster ride. Never would I've thought in a thousands years that the freedom that once we thought was a given, is now a luxury. Nevertheless, there was one meal, one celebration that I was seriously looking forward to that year end - my Christmas Celebration at DC Restaurant.

I've heard so many amazing stories about the place, I knew I had to find an opportunity and an ocassion to try it for myself. I'd have to claim that it was, in fact one of the best and most fulfilling meal I've had in the longest time.

I'm gonna go all out and say that DC Restaurant is probably the best fine-dining restaurant there is in KL. The dishes are French-Thai influenced. It's gonna be difficult to beat this dining experience.

In this write-up, I will not give a detailed review of the food - everything we had was sumptous - but rather, a glimpse of the overall dining experience.

The theme of the evening was you guessed it - White. Far right, with Darren Chin himself, thanks for the amazing preparation. #roadtomichelinstar

For this year's Christmas celebration, there were 10 of us altogether, so I booked a private room for our feast that evening, 2-weeks in advance, which gave us plenty of privacy and comfort throughout the meal.

To note, there was a 50% or RM150/pax deposit payment required upfront.

As part of the DC Festive Menu, we opted for the 5-course 'Fruits De Mer" Seafood Menu (RM498++/person). There was an option to go with wine-pairing (add. RM350++/person for 4 glasses) or without. We went without the wine-pairing and instead, brought-our-own, with a get 1 bottle from the house and bring 1 without extra corkerage charges. The standard corkerage fee is RM100.00/bottle.

The menu starts from a 3-course to 8-course, and changes according to season, so expect new curations throughout the year.

Kickstarting our meal with some freshly baked French pastries. The breads are refillable, but a little tip here - don't stuff yourself too full with the breads, the coming meal will be a stomach-full.

We were also serve with 3 other 'Chef's Complimentary Snacks',

• Mini tartlet of cured mackerel, daikon, lime aioli
• Shellfish ice cream with local heirloom tomatoes, crispy skrei fish skin
• Crispy white fungus in mushroom stock, fresh cheese with mix herb and bottarga skrei pearls

For the 1st course, we had the Hiramasa Australian king fish “Kaviari” gold standard Ossestra caviar, Jalapeno, aged ponzu in katsuobushi.

Followed by the 2nd course, “Echo of the Sea” DC’s signature cold cappellini with Hokkaido uni, Alaskan king crab, cured Amaebi and savoury seafood sabayon. This was one of DC's signature dishes, an apparent constant in all of their menus, and also one of the crowd favorite among my friends. This was definitely a palate-opener.

There was also an optional course add-on, which we did not take. It was a dish of Pacific Oysters (add. RM75++/person) and Seared Foie Gras (add. RM80++/person)

For the 3rd course, we had Silverhill farm Irish duck 7 days aged crispy skin duck breast with four spice rub, duck rilletes with pickled roselle, grilled green scallion. This combination, is one of the best duck dish I've had.

Portions came huge. By the time the main course came, I was already close to full capacity.

There were essentially 3 options for the main course, to put it simply - Steak, Lobster or Lamb. The lamb was not in the menu - you'd have to ask.

Service was exceptional, every dish was explained to us before we dug-in.

I chose the Hitachi Japanese A5 wagyu (Ibaraki prefecture) Eggplant done two ways – roasted with garum and baked with white miso, pommes anna. There was no option to choose the steak temperature, all of it came medium rare - prefect for my liking. The meat, the dish, was a carnivor's dream. Needless to say, most of the table opted for this option.

The second option for main course, Brittany Bleu Rock Lobster Butter poached in lobster butter, potato cake with chitose tomatoes, sweet corn velouté and lobster sauce americaine.

And the Rack of Lamb, which was not in the menu, but served as requested.

The 5th course, also the last course, was a serving of either dessert or cheese

• “Christmas Black Forest”
• Milk & Honey Wild flower honey from Mae Rim province Chiang Mai in Parfait glace, apple cider gel, caramel streusel with milk ice-cream and honeycomb
• Le Fromage 5 types of A.O.P cheeses from our cheese trolley accompanied with fresh honeycomb, wild flower nectar collected from the hills of Mae-rim Province, Chiang Mai, Thailand

There were 10 of us and only 1 had the cheese, but it was good enough to go around the table. I'd highly recommend the Le Fromage to share. A cheese cart would then be pushed into the room and you'd get to pick 5 cheese to go with a side of crackers.

Although we were stuffed to the brim towards the end, we finished off our meal with a birthday cake from The Buttercake Factory, for a friend's birthday.

Followed by one of the most hilarious and memorable gift exchange I've ever done.

The criteria behind our gift exchange this year was functional gifts below RM5.00. Some of the top moments would be - one hanger, a RM5.00 toto ticket, a soft toilet seat cover, a set of AA batteries. It was very-very-very fun.
