SpicyScoops | My 93 Year Old Gu-Poh Plays The Piano

It was a scorching Saturday evening, way sunnier than it'd usually be. I sluggishly dragged myself out of bed, after a 15 minute power nap, with a heavy head to add. Waking up to a mid-noon headache is the worst wake-up-antidote anyone could possibly get. I hurriedly changed into some less-crinkled clothes, hoped into the car and made way to my cousin's place. We were already running a little late.

Despite the minor determent, I was in fact, gleefully looking forward to tonight's Indian dinner feast - a somewhat untouched territory of my taste buds.

I was greeted with all-smiles upon stepping through the door, followed by a gush of soothing air from the air-con. That, felt really good. I can definitely do with some cool air for now.

Tables have already been extended and set even before we arrived, with neatly laden table mats and plates already in place. And the food - all stored in microwavable containers, ready to be heated once everyone arrives. I couldn't help myself but leaned in for a closer look - an assortment of red, brown and greens. Way to much curry going around to be honest, but I'm not complaining, I'm just hungry.

While we waited for dinner to be served, we hung around the living room - just chilling. We munched on some keropok lekor and Chinese pancakes - clearly straying from our dinner theme later. There were music playing at the background, some orchestra notes I think, though clearly nothing compared to live music to say the least. That was when my gupoh felt that it was her-time to play.

Gu Poh, or my grand-aunt, is 93 years old this year.

I don't see her much. In fact, this is the first time I've seen her since I left Australia, and that was sometime back in 2009/10. Their family lives in Australia, hence the intermittent gatherings. Skype was our usual communication reference. I was glad that they decided with a trip back to homeland this time round, just in time for Christmas and New Years celebration.

It was nice, not merely the tunes, but the sight watching her play. The moment was definitely video-worthy.

I guess it's in the family - playing the piano I mean. We were all compelled to learn when we were kids. I fondly remembered spending quite a fair share of my childhood years, slouched over the piano, attempting my hardest to perfect those never ending musical notes. After all the hard-earned effort, I have to admit that I gradually lost touch over the years. My piano serves as an ornament now, sitting in the living room collecting dust.

One day - one very fine day, I shall post a video of me playing the piano. We went on and had a satisfying dinner feast after the entertainment ended.
